NEW HELP FOR WOMEN HELPING WOMEN

The Northwest Women's Club was started in April of 1971 to help the women of the northwest Houston area, which was then rather sparsely populated, to become better adjusted and acquainted. The original eight members rang doorbells, visited new subdivisions, and generally spread the word until the membership grew to nearly 200 in some years. The current membership is 140 plus.

Scholarships are the main philanthropic interest of the NWWC, and have totaled- $100,000 in awards to outstanding area college-bound students. They are the high point of every year.

In it's 30 years of existence, the club has donated over $120,000 to charities, including Spring Creek Branch YMCA, Meadowbriar Home for Girls, Good Samaritan Home, Northwest Assistance Ministries, Tyler Boys Home, local Hospices, Houston Area Community Center, and needy families from four of the local grade schools. Women Helping Women is NWWC's latest endeavor, and what a pleasure it has been to lend a helping hand to this cause. The NWWC is looking forward to many years of association with Women Helping Women.

For fun and entertainment the ladies of the NWWC enjoy canasta, bridge, bunko, book club, monthly luncheon meetings, and trips near and far.

Some members have been with the club since the early years, and some are "brand new", as well as many in between. Together, through good times and bad, they do their best to live in the spirit of the club prayer which says: "God, give us sympathy, common sense, and help us with courage high. God, give us calm and confidence, and a twinkle in our eye."
